The veteran British DJ, who spent the last four decades bringing
world music to a wider audience, has died at 68. The Guardian notes
his impact on the globalized music scene: His discoveries were
numerous, from Johnnie Allen’s Cajun version of Chuck
Berry’s Promised Land in the early 1970s, through Youssou
N’Dour and Salif Keita to Mariza, the young singer of
Portuguese fado music who went from appearances on Charlie’s
show in 2001 to sellout concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Throughout the last decade he compiled CD anthologies, presenting
the best of new music from around the world. (Thanks for the tip,

Tipping is a tricky issue in China. It's officially forbidden by
the government, and locals simply don't do it. In general, follow
their lead without qualms. Nevertheless, the practice is beginning
to catch on, especially among tour guides, who often expect Y10 a
day. Official CTS representatives aren't allowed to accept tips,
but you can give them candy, T-shirts, and other small gifts. You
don't need to tip in restaurants or in taxis—many drivers
insist on handing over your change, however small.

It still amazes me how many contrasting types of scenery there are
in Australia. Getting off the plane in Cairns well in the tropics
it felt weird to even be in the same country. Everything is so
green and lush and there are big hills everywhere. The humidity is
almost unbearable and you sweat even when you're not doing anything
although that's only at this time of year which is the wet season
