Portugal: Try to catch a fado show
The word fado means fate, and, like the blues, fado songs are full of fatalism. The image of a black-shawled fadista, head thrown back, eyes closed with emotion, voice rising and falling with soulful song, is quintessentially Portuguese. Many casas de fado are also restaurants; some offer a mix of fado and folk-dancing shows.

self serve frozen yogurt in Beaverton
I love the new Peachwave Self Serve Frozen Yogurt store. I went last weekend and already returned last night. There is a whole wall of frozen yogurt flavors and a counter of self-serve toppings to choose from. Everything costs the same, so there is no confusion on what you should pile on; everything is .36 an ounce. I got the lactose-free pineapple soft serve and topped it with toasted coconut, fresh mango and pineapple. Just a little bit of paradise in Beaverton!

Review for Lexidog Boutique & Social Club
LexiDog Boutique & Social Club was founded in May 2002 by Portland native Suzanne Hein, and of course her Min Pin, Lexi. Suzanne's extensive experience as a Vice-President of Merchandising for a large regional retailer created the desire to continue her passion for retail with her own company. Her love of Lexi gave her the inspiration for LexiDog; a place where dogs are our children who deserve to be a little spoiled, as well as a 'social' place where parents could bring their dog to a fun, loving and safe daycare while they were at work, and enjoy 'social' activities centered around their pet.

If you liked The Bridges Of Madison County (or even if ya didn't) you'll like visiting Irish Bend covered bridge. It is wonderful place to visit and so peaceful out there. It's on the campus of Oregon State but you'd never know it. Lots of trees in the area and a nearby creek, too. The road there is paved so it makes for a comfortable bicycle ride or small hike. I recommend that people bring their own water supply as there are no fountains in the area. Also, bring a camera you'll want to take pictures of the sights along the way in addition to the bridge.

A unique place to stay. Perfect for some but not for others.
I really liked staying at the Sylvia Beach hotel, but my man wasn't too crazy about it. Hence the reason I say it's perfect for some but not for others lol. Anyway, what appealed to me most about the hotel is the history of the place, the fact that it's meant for book lovers, and its proximity to the ocean and Historic Nye Beach. Staying there is literally like stepping back in time with no blaring radios, TV, computers (three of the reasons my man didn't like it...he's a gadget addict). However, if one seeks peace and quiet, then the Sylvia Beach Hotel really and truly is relaxing place to get away from it all. The place is definitely geared towards adults who are also book lovers or authors. As quietness is expected at this hotel, I'd say that the Syl...

A Newport Tradition. Good food at a reasonable price
To me, a trip to Newport just isn't complete without going to Mo's for their chowder. It is the best. However, they also make other very good seafood dishes as well. I highly recommend the grilled salmon. The desserts are very tasty as well. Mind you, the lines can be quite long but if you get to the place at the right time (which varies) you can get seated right away. The decor is something of a mish-mash but very interesting. If you're in the main place vs the annex, check out the garage door...there is a very interesting story behind it. Just ask any of the waitstaff.

One doesn't go to Local Boyz for their ambience. It's a pretty straightforward restaurant. Apart from a few posters, there's not a lot of decor. One does go to Local Boyz for the food which is plentiful and tasty! I really enjoy the beef and the macaroni salad in the plate lunches. The ribs are pretty tasty, too. My one complaint is that they don't offer any desserts and there's no alcohol. Still, I'd recommend Local Boyz for an authentic Hawaiian cuisine experience.

Good Food, Good Prices
The Village Inn Restaurant is under new management and making a comeback! The breakfast menu is large and varied -- the steak and eggs are exceptional! It's food that makes you feel good, and the coffee is bottomless and good. The bar has a happy hour menu with, among other things, a cheesy cheeseburger for $2.99 that is thick, meaty and comes with seasoned waffle fries! The onion rings were perfect! They just started an all-you-can-eat lunch bar -- including salad, soup, several entrees and delicious cookies and brownies. The food has a home-cooked quality and actually has taste! The staff is very friendly and greet you at the door with a big smile. It has now become my restaurant of choice in the area. I can't wait until they open for dinner!

A Must See and Taste
As a long time Cabernet lover, I was very impressed with the quality, care and pride the Dividians displayed in their tasting room, gift shop and alpaca farm. But, back to the wine first: it is exquisite and should be recognized for it's excellence. I bought a case on my first visit! This wine should be tasted and invested in because it is certain to increase in popularity and price. The trip to Caprice has something for everyone in the family - stop by and see for yourselves!

Hard to Find but worth it!
After we attended the excellent Portland Zoo we TRIED to find Pittock Mansion. Although we had directions & a map the roads were very twisty & tricky to follow. We asked 3 different people on the side of the road and eventually made it! Both Adults & teens enjoyed the Mansion & we used discount tickets to get in without any trouble. My two tips are; use a GPS and take the tour inside rather than just walking through by yourself as it was very informative & free!

Great for Teens- Irish Pub Crawl
While staying in Portland 2 nights we ate twice at Irish Pubs! www.thirstylionpub.com - (503) 222-2155 and Kells. The kids were excited to be in the fun attmosphere and the price (VERY REASONIBLE) menu & service was excellent for family fun. Teenagers can be picky eaters and hard to please and both establishments made our under age kids feel welcome. The kids loved watching the bartender serve up drinks with speed & style and since it was a few days before St. Paddy's the places were decorated in a feastive way. Really fun places for lunch, dinner or snack.

R.I.P. Charlie Gillett
The veteran British DJ, who spent the last four decades bringing world music to a wider audience, has died at 68. The Guardian notes his impact on the globalized music scene: His discoveries were numerous, from Johnnie Allen’s Cajun version of Chuck Berry’s Promised Land in the early 1970s, through Youssou N’Dour and Salif Keita to Mariza, the young singer of Portuguese fado music who went from appearances on Charlie’s show in 2001 to sellout concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Throughout the last decade he compiled CD anthologies, presenting the best of new music from around the world. (Thanks for the tip, Frank.)
