What Ireland lacks in warm weather, it makes up for with warm and
welcoming residents. From crowded pubs that house sing-alongs and
cheers to the rolling green countryside of the rural areas, Ireland
is a beautiful blend of mountain, sea, sky, and a whole lot of
fun.Its charismatic capital, Dublin, is no exception. A small city
with museums, parks and a relentless love for beer, Dublin and its
hospitable folk are fantastic hosts for any traveler looking for a
jovial vacation.
Sometimes, there is a difference between traveling and vacationing.
Traveling is immersing yourself into a place to absorb a local
culture from the inside out. Learning the language, exploring new
customs, and delving into a place’s history.
Vacationing, on the other hand, is fun, relaxation, and a really
good time – no matter where it is.
Every autumn, the world erupts for the hoppy concoction that we all
know as beer. Dark, light, ice-cold or cask, the wonderful beverage
of fermented barley and yeast gets its very own celebration. What
began as a wedding celebration in Munich 200 years ago now revolves
entirely around the drink itself and sometimes
– of course – the food. On
average, more than 6 million people travel to Munich for the
festivities each year, so if you happen to be one of them, check
out our Top 10 things to do in Munich (even if
you’re not heading to the party) and raise a
glass of ale, lager, stout, blonde or whatever else you can handle.
Los Angeles isn’t just about celebrity bloggers
and those pesky paparazzi. There are tons of things to do and see
in this town that don’t involve driving by the
90210 set. The year-round temperate climate attracts beachgoers and
outdoor lovers alike. Check out the best views of the city from
Mulholland Drive and catch a Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers or Kings
game. Shoppers won’t be disappointed by the
Farmer’s Market, the Grove and Rodeo Drive.
If you are looking to squeeze in one last meaningful trip this
summer, Washington D.C. is the most apt place to learn about the
nation’s capital. Now through Sep. 7, you can
enjoy the Friends and Family Rate at the Washington Court Hotel on
Capitol Hill. This promotional rate of $99 is good for any length
of stay during your next visit.
A few days into a recent trip to Las Vegas, it became clear to me
that my bank account and peace of mind could both likely benefit
from a calming day trip to the Grand Canyon.
I’m not much of a gambler, and the overcrowded
Fourth of July weekend atmosphere in Vegas was getting to be a
little much, so a relaxing experience with one of
nature’s most incredible creations was just
what I needed. Like most Vegas visitors, I
didn’t hit it big at the tables, so if I wanted
to see the Canyon I had to do it cheaply.
Seattle is a picturesque city with a sought-after waterfront scene.
Sip on a famous cup of coffee and enjoy one of the best views in
Seattle while shopping at Pike Place Market. Outdoor lovers should
take advantage of the handful of scenic parks and gardens,
especially the Kubota Japanese Garden in South Seattle. Obviously
you can’t skip the Space Needle at the Seattle
Center. Dine in the SkyCity Restaurant, 500 feet above the ground.
Attention outdoor adventurists: The Craddock Terry Hotel in
Lynchburg, Virginia is featuring an “Outdoor
Enthusiast†package that is good through the month of
September. Standard rooms start at just $170/night and include a
2-hour bike rental, a tube float trip, a $50 dining gift
certificate, rock climbing, hiking and much more.
This package includes a flight into Paris and out of Prague, hotel
for three nights in each city, flight from Paris to Prague, daily
breakfast and hotel taxes, all for just $969. Packages are also
customizable and several departure cities are available.
While summer’s end is a sad farewell, the crisp
autumn air brings a new season and a new reason for travel. New
England has forever been a place of worship for foliage followers,
but there are other places to catch the altering change in leaves
– and with shorter flights to more nearby
regions, you can save on your weekend of leaf-peeping.
What a whirlwind for Mexicana, and their passengers: The airline
entered bankruptcy, got bought by an alliance of investors and
pilots, and shut down completely, all in the space of a month. And
while the subsidiaries Mexicana Click (a discount airline) and
Mexicana Link (a regional airline affiliate) were spared at first,
they’re down for [...]
Business class fare sales are like clockwork, at least in the
northern hemisphere: You’ll see one fare sale for mid-summer
travel, and one for December. In both cases, business travel slows
significantly as people take time off and spend it with family. In
both cases, airlines respond (often proactively) by slashing
business class fares. Take [...]
Downgraded: Airtran Airtran has been slapped with a $500,000 fine
for failing to assist disabled passengers and further failing to
respond adequately to complaints between 2007 and 2009. Upgraded:

This week, our household received three credit card offers from
Citibank, all for American Airlines AAdvantage credit cards. Each
came with a different sum of bonus miles: 30,000, 50,000, and
75,000 miles. (Two of the envelopes were addressed to my wife, one
to me.) Talk about mixed messages! The 75K bonus (with $1,500 in

LAN Airlines has an interesting special for those looking to travel
in comfort from the US to South America, especially to Argentina,
Chile, Peru, or Ecuador: They’re running a strong sale for
business class, and throwing in a free (economy) domestic roundtrip
ticket. The domestic roundtrip isn’t a connection: it’s
a separate ticket that’s valid [...]

Album Tacos. Brilliant. Just one example of many:
‘Tis the season for lots of vacation talk, and so the Capitol
Hill crowd turned its attention to shrinking vacation syndrome this
week: First, a British columnist speculated that Americans
“find it hard to relax” because of their Puritan
heritage. Washington Post columnist Ezra Klein responded: I’d
say it’s more closely related to the fact that it’s
hard to pass social welfare legislation in the American political
system, and thus America is the only industrialized country that
doesn’t guarantee its workers some amount of paid-vacation
leave. NRO’s Reihan Salam followed up with a mild defense of
the American system. (Via The Daily Dish)

Only one more week to wait! *squee*I do have to say, though, the
couple of book leaks I have seen make me nervous. Because I
do NOT want spoilers. I don't even want to hear vague
statements like "It ends badly" or "I love the way the
ended!". I may have to go into lockdown mode. No
twitter, no Facebook, no blog reading until I've read
Mockingjay for myself. Unless people keep their spoilers to
themselves. Let's revisit Suzanne Collins' statement shall
we?One of the most important things to me is that everyone in the
world is going to be able to experience the final book of The
Hunger Games all at the same time, and be able to discover what
happens in the book without hearing about it elsewhere first. Word
will certainly travel fast, but I urge you â...
A question I often ask myself when reading a dystopian or post
apocalyptic novel is: would I survive? I always think it
would certainly help if I had some kick a$$ characters on my
side. Naturally, no single character has the universal skills
it takes to survive the wide range of world ending scenarios
authors have thought up over the years, so it is
essential to pick a good team.So here's who'd I pick:Peeta
from The Hunger Games just because I love himLena from Gone because
she's a healer and you can always use thatElspeth from Obernewtyn
because she can farspeak (telepathy), beastspeak, and has the power
of coercionTool from Shipbreaker as my muscleTopher from Dollhouse
as my computer geniusI asked my dystopian reader panel who'd they
want on their team (up to 5 cha...
A few months ago, I was watching a season one episode of the the TV
series DOLLHOUSE (very dystopian by the way - check it out) in
which we jump to a future date in a post-apocalyptic Los
Angeles. The characters happen upon the dollhouse (which was
designed as a self-contained building underground) and discover not
only does everything work, there are even hot showers.
This is too much for one of the characters to resist and she
indulges, with predictably dire consequences. That of course got me
thinking that if I were her, I probably would've done the same
thing. Because long, hot showers are something I'd miss very
much if I lived in a dystopian/post-apocalyptic world (unless, of
course, I lived in one where you still could take hot showers, but
I digress...)I asked ...
And so we come to the end of the Hunger Games road. I am weighing
in relatively late with my thoughts because it was a pain to get my
hands on a copy here in Germany, but I finally got one (no thanks
to amazon.de btw – fail!) and just finished
reading a couple of hours ago. My reviews never have spoilers in
them, but I have to make an exception for MOCKINGJAY. If you read
the first two books, my opinion is not going to keep you from
reading it anyway, and if you haven’t read any
of the series, well, no time like the present to get started! So,
ahem….MOCKINGJAY starts off with Katniss in
District 13, which we find out went deep underground and because of
its possession of nukes, was able to strike a deal with the capitol
to remain off the map. President Coin wants to use Katniss as
the...
I know I focused on very new/upcoming titles (mostly YA) this
month, so I asked my dystopian reader panel for some
recommendations of older/more obscure/adult dystopian works.Diana
Peterfreund recommends:I really love Marianne Mancusi's RAZOR GIRL.
I don't know if it's still in print. It's a zombie book with all
kinds of cyberpunk shout-outs and it's told half before and half
after the zombie apocalypse, from the point of view of a girl who
has been turned into a weapon by her father in preparation for the
coming plague. Also, seriously, FEED, by MT Anderson, though that
was an LA Times notable book when it came out, so I don't know how
"obscure" it is. But it's amazing. It's set in a very scary, very
realistic near future in which everyone has the internet in their
brains, and it shows ho...
Jacob Durango is a trained regulator on Mars, but fell into
disgrace when his father went to prison. Still,
he’s bound by the tenets of a regulator, so
when a mining crew from the South Pole engages his services to
protect them from a band of Draeu, Jacob accepts. He already knows
the job won’t be easy or well-paid, but then,
he gets more than he ever bargained for…First
off, I loved the voice in this novel. Jacob is snarky and fun and
has an easy rapport with the AI grafted to his brain (who also
happens to be his former chief, Mimi). The dialogue is fast-paced
and often hilarious, making for an enjoyable read despite the
rather shallow characterization of some of the supporting
characters (for example, I couldn’t for the
life of me distinguish between Jenkins and Fuse, two dim-bu...
This is my last book review of Dystopian August (I know - so
sad!). I have an unrelated book tour tomorrow, and will
do my recap post (with a final AWESOME giveaway) on Thursday.
Look for it!At her naming ceremony, Deuce finally receives the
triple cuts on each of her arms that signify her as a huntress
among her people. As a huntress, Deuce not only gathers food but
also protects her underground community from wild mutant
scavengers. She’s paired up with Fade, a
mysterious young man who claims to have originally come from the
surface. When they are sent out on patrol and discover that their
nearest neighbors have been overrun, the enclave elders dismiss
their concerns, and Deuce realizes her blind obedience to the
enclave may not be the best course of action.A dystopian...
Of all the YA novels I've read over the past 3 years, IF I STAY is
in my top 10. (Read my gushing review). That's why I
was super excited to hear there is a sequel told from Adam's POV.
If you haven’t read IF I STAY, the mere
existence of a sequel is sort of a spoiler, so you really should
not pay attention to this teaser tour and should go read IF I
STAY first (and you should check the end of the post for a
GIVEAWAY). But for the rest of you, who felt the book left you
hanging and wondered what would happen after that squeeze of the
hand, the wait is almost over: WHERE SHE WENT comes out April
2011. Still, a long time, I know, but right now Gayle
Forman is doing a teaser tour to give IF I STAY fans
the scoop on what they can expect fr...
What a month! It's was A LOT of work to bring you all this
dystopian fun, but it was well worth it! Thanks for all your
comments and support. Here's a recap of what went on.REVIEWSI
reviewed 24 dystopian or post-apocalyptic novels and rated them
between 1-5 on the Zombie Chicken scale. Basically, I went
into every book expecting a solid, worthwhile read which is 3
Zombie Chickens. If a book wowed me, it got an extra Zombie
Chicken (for 4), and if I fell in love with it, it earned a perfect
5. If I had some reservations about it, I docked it a Zombie
Chicken (for 2) and if I really didn't like it, it only got 1
lonely Zombie Chicken. Here's a recap (links lead to my

The haunting grounds are set in
a decrepit 108-year-old warehouse facing Suzhou Creek, and on the
long, winding walk there, you feel yourself straying further and
further from the safety of a quick rescue. At least that's how I
felt when contemplating whether or not to run away from Shanghai
Nightmare, now the world's largest haunted house. Maybe a little
introduction is required: Shanghai Nightmare began last year - a
plot hatched up by 26-year-old American-Chinese Gan Quan and his
girlfriend Xu Jiali, who left their jobs at Intel to make
nightmares come true. Last year's gig proved so successful that a
second round was inevitable. This year, they collaborated with
Erebus Haunted Attraction - the Guinness record holders for longest
walk-through haunt...
While most of the news about e-waste in China is on its deadly
environmental impact, Shanghai Scrap argues that really, what
people should be talking about now is the country's new
comprehensive e-waste recycling programs - one of the best funded
in the world. Not only is it saving the environment, it could give
you great discounts on new tech! Thanks to the direct subsidies for
purchasing old electronics, an informal market has sprung up to
sell you dead tech to exchange for recycling vouchers. It's a win
on all fronts - for you, for e-waste resellers and for the
environment!
From People Forum China and India, never quite besties, are now at
odds with each other over a whole host of issues. It seems that as
the world's two most populated countries continue to gain economic
and political influence, their relationship with each other has
become increasingly strained. But who'd have expected the conflict
to actually hit the Expo in Shanghai? The problem: maps at the
India Pavilion were allegedly showing certain parts of Tibet and
Arunachal Pradesh as belonging to India - claims that China
contests. Arunachal Pradesh is an area that's located in the far
northeast of India and contains parts China considers as sections
of its Tibetan Autonomous Region. A 1914 treaty between Great
Britain and the de facto independent government of Tibet
established the McMahon...
Restaurant proprietor
Cotton Ding has done such a good job with her establishments that
people were inspired to document her life and offer her awards for
having the best personality in F&B. So when she announced she
would be opening a restaurant, showcasing authentic versions of her
local cuisine (Hunan), I had to check it out. Now, to be honest,
I'm not really sure what authentic Hunan cuisine is. I've been to
Di Shui Dong, Guyi and a host of other joints around town, but the
only thing I have to compare it to in actual Hunan is
third-world-style village food made in towns even people from Hunan
don't always know. Cotton's food at Hunan Houseis nothing like what
I ate there - and thank goodness. Instead, I suppose the best way
to describe it is...

Apparently, some Shanghainese are taking umbrage with girls'
outfits this summer. Seems like, to beat the heat, girls are
wearing less and less, and some people feel the extra skin is a
"visual disturbance." In a survey on Xinhua, 55% admitted to being
uncomfortable by the ways girls were dressing nowadays, and 62% of
men even considered it sexual harassment! Jeez, you'd think with
all the buddha belly baring, guys would be a little more open to

A
stone’s throw away from the Bund is the Shiliupu docks.
Recently rebuilt, for the hefty sum of three billion RMB, the dock
saw its official opening on Saturday. Unfortunately, it seems that
the only thing the dock is open for is critique. Shiliupu dock
(Shiliu - 16, Pu - Stores) is one of the city's oldest wharf areas;
it played an important role in the development of Shanghai and
helped it to make a name for itself in the shipping industry.
Unfortunately, it was also the dock that time forgot. Over the last
couple of decades, growth on both sides of the Huangpu River, the
development of Pudong, and the adoption of other methods of
transport led to its decline in business. The dock was demolished

While this morning was all blue skies and fluffy white clouds, the
weather has changed quite drastically - and now, Shanghai's
Meterological Bureau is saying that Shanghai's first day of school
(tomorrow) will also welcome the first day of the Typhoon Kompasu.
Expect heavy rainfall and winds between level 6 or 8 on the
Beauford Scale (anywhere from between 39km/h to 74km/h). We'd argue
from the storming outside that the MetBu's a little late - Typhoon
Kompasu's already knocking at the door.

and Shanghai has taken 12th place. Both of these Asian metropolises
have out placed Tokyo, and even helped remove Rome from the
‘Big 5’ as it dropped from 4 to 22; the biggest decline
the ranking has ever seen. Shanghai is often coined the

Update on Shanghai's smoking crackdown: It took three months for
the smoking ban to nab one establishment. Now, according to Xinmin,
that number has risen to 66 as of June 30. Another 1,345 were given
a warning. Unfortunately, that's hardly... well, anything. There's
probably 66 stores in one section of a street here in Shanghai. But
officials insist that the overall smoking rate in the city has gone
down. Stats collected by their team of anti-smoke regulating
volunteers found that the smoking rate at banned locations dropped
to 28.1% from 37.5%, while incidences where people were discouraged
from smoking went from 19% to 51.9%.

While today has been delightfully not typhooning so far (cross our

Back when we covered the opening of Shanghai's
first apple store in the IFC building of Lujiazui, we mentioned
that this was just the beginning of a full retail onslaught Apple
had planned for China. Now several people have reported seeing the
next Shanghai Apple Store on Huaihai Lu. One tipster, who sent in
the first picture, reported that it was located at the corner where
there "was a computer/electronics market not too long ago (before
it got shifted further east on Huaihai)..." The other two pictures
are from MIC Gadget. If what Apple's Senior Vice President of
Retail Ron Johnson said was true, it is one of two other stores in
Shanghai (and one of 23 in the entire country) that will open by
2012.
The argument that more press freedom is the first step towards
political reform here in China is not new. But it feels like, with
Wen Jiabao's recent remarks on the very subject and new protections
for independent press, the doors have opened for academia to
discuss their right to... well, discuss. China Media Project has
translated a blog post by Peking University Professor of Law He
Weifang comparing Shanghai and Guangzhou's media during the World
Expo and Asian Games, respectively. Namely how, while Guangzhou's
media was a storm of criticism, Shanghai's media 'had been
“had.”' The most notable quote, I think, is something
I've discussed with various Chinese locals who've insisted that
more media freedom would lead to more chaos in China: "The people
can voice their resentmen...
Last month, we asked the folks at Jaiya's Animal Rescue to help us

should! And here's why: Every year, during the Spring/Summer

and parks of Shanghai. Jaiya’s Animal Rescue (JAR) and other
animal rescue groups do their best to rescue, rehabilitate and
re-home abandoned animals since all of them deserve a second chance
in life. However, a major problem during this season is the number

Is it our sexy Bund waterfront? The promise of haggling in old
merchant gardens? The Expo (probably not)? Whatever it is, Shanghai
beat out Beijing and Chengdu as the place international tourists
want to visit the most in China! The poll, co-conducted by Gallup
and Fudan University, found that Shanghai ranked top in most of 12
qualities, which included criteria such as attractiveness, culture,
environment, individuality, integrity and investment value. It was
deemed lower, however, in security.
We're not exactly who's behind these literal English translations
of Chinese songs, but they seem to have gained quite a following!
Youku user Ouzi (欧å, which could be
literally translated into "Euro kid") has 27 videos of literal
translations up on his page. The most recent one, about Chinese
children's songs, was published 8 hours ago but has already
garnered over 20,000 hits. All of the different songs follow the
same easy, but hilarious format. Ouzi makes a literal translation
of the words of the song: for instance,
“没有共产党就没有新ä¸å›½"
becomes "No the Communist Party, No the new China." Then he sings
it in slightly tone deaf broken English and everybody,
English-speaking or not, is entertained! Besides translating
Chinese songs into English, apparently Ouz...
I was just in Qingdao for the weekend for the Beer Festival, but it
looks like the real beer drinking fun was to be had in its northern
neighbor Weihai. This deer has been known to knock back four beers
over the course of the day and will often deny water in order to
get more beer. Good thing it's Tsingtao, so no worries about the
deer being dehydrated too quickly. The Telegraph has more
information: According to Zhang Xiangxi, who works as a waitress at
the resort's restaurant, she discovered the deer's unusual tastes
last November when she was cleaning up after some customers. She
says: "I saw a bottle of beer was still half full so I playfully
passed it to the deer. Unexpectedly it bit the bottle and raised
its head and drank all the beer in one shot." Since then, says
Zhang, whenever...
young couple, girl pulling away from boys advances. As if
China’s hormonal and horny students haven’t got enough
to contend with. With universities getting all up in their "are you
or aren't you a mistress" business and some high schools already
patrolling the halls for kissing couples, now "God" has gotten in
the way of them even learning about doing it... at least in Yunnan.
The Educational Bureau of Yunnan province has recently instructed

is the cool capital of Australia. This video shows you why.
How you can avoid too much pressure on your wallet whilst having a
great time in Sydney.
The Blue Mountains is Sydney's greatest recreation area for people
who prefer the bush to the sea. They are part of the Great Dividing
Range, which stretches from Gippsland region of Victoria in the
south to the tropical rainforests of north Queensland. The Blue
Mountains are so named because, from Sydney, they look blue. They
are clad in vast forests of eucalypts (commonly called gum trees),
which in the hot sun discharge a fine mist of eucalyptus oil from
their leaves. The mist refracts light, which makes the haze look
blue at a distance. That same oil makes the Australian bush as
volatile as a pine forest in a bush (forest) fire. The vapour
explodes, causing the fire to race through the canopy.
