Book Review: Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness
Full scale war is on the horizon for the citizens of New Prentisstown. Will Todd and Viola be able to barter a lasting peace for those already on the planet and those on the way? This last book in a fantastic series exceeded even my highest expectations. I was completely enthralled, and highly emotionally invested in the outcome – not just for the fates of Todd and Viola, but also, yes, for Todd’s horse (#teamboycolt). For those of you who read the first book (and I certainly hope you have if you are reading this review), you know that Ness has no qualms about killing off our favorite animals. And that’s why one of the thoughts that was foremost on my mind while I was reading this was “He better not kill Todd’s horse!†Anyway, back to Todd and Viola. They’ve both been through ...

Dystopian Reader Views - A Look at Plausibility
“What validates fiction is plausibility, which it creates for itself, most notably through accurate, honest observation of the world it creates. This created world is of course more or less directly related to and dependent on the actual, factual world outside the book.†Ursula K. LeGuinFor me to really get lost in a story, I have to believe in the plausibility of the world the author presents.  That doesn't mean, of course, that everything has to work according to the rules of our actual, non-fictional world. But if the story is set in our world, then I need the author to convince me that the implausible things happening in the story are happening for a reason.Dystopian works often take a modern issue and magnify it through the lense of fiction, and this is always most ...

Book Review: Green Angel by Alice Hoffman
15 year old Green didn’t go into the city that day with her family, but instead saw from the ridge how the city was destroyed. As conditions worsen around her, Green covers herself in black ink and thorns to protect herself from a desperate populace, and as a way to mourn all that she has lost.In a starred review back when this was released in 2003, Publisher’s Weekly described this as a “post-apocalyptic fairy tale leavened with hope.†I mention this because this does read far more like a fairy tale than a typical dystopian, and that has a lot to do with Hoffman’s use of language. Here’s how it starts:"I once believed that life was a gift. I thought whatever I wanted I would someday possess. Is this greed, or only youth? Is it hope or stupidity? As far as I was concerned the f...

Burnt TVCC tower in Beijing now starting to be rebuilt

According to the Global Times, workers started marching to the building on Wednesday: The reconstruction is divided into two stages of dismantling and rebuilding and the previous design will be retained. Chen Guangbiao, president of Jiangsu Huangpu Renewable Resources Company, in charge of the dismantling process, told the Global Times, "The damaged parts will be removed with care for the environment." Feng Xuegang, a construction worker from Jiangsu Huangpu, said the whole dismantling part is scheduled to finish by the end of this year. A slightly more detailed article on the Global Times...

16% of Shanghai public pools contain "excess levels" of pee
I suppose considering where we've seen kids pee in Shanghai, this isn't quite so surprising - but still... GROSS! More than than 16% of public swimming pools in the city have excess levels of urea, according to officials from the Shanghai Health Supervision Agency. The worst thing: excess levels of urea don't warrant anything - fine, punishment or mandatory change of water. Instead, authorities "usually give notice and suggest pool owners change the water more frequently." Well gee, I'm not going into any public pools anytime soon.

Forbes: The weird things people get used to in China
Jessie Chen at Forbes' China Tracker lists the weird things that we get used to living here in China. Unfortunately, it's not stuff like "turning on the VPN" or "watching a kid pee on the street," heading into territory that's more like "mine disasters" and "violent evictions." Still, even if it's being serious, the list is hardly comprehensive. I'd add "useless prostitute busts" and "Premier Wen Jiabao showing up at another possibly man-made 'natural' disaster." You?

China's first pop singer fined for lip-synching tries to commit suicide
Photo from this Fang Ziyuan blog One of China's first pop singers to be fined for lip-synching, Fang Ziyuan, has allegedly tried to commit suicide, according to a Chengdu newspaper. Fang and her co-worker Ying Youcan, were accused of lip-synching their guest appearance at a Chinese pop diva's concert last year. Fang had grown up in Chengdu, learning to dance there. She had later moved on to Shanghai Film Academy, graduating as a performing professional. In September last year, she became the backup singer for superstar Huang Shenyi (黄圣ä¾) - better known as the girl with the lollipop in Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle - at a concert in Chengdu. In November, she and Ying Youcan were tried and fined for having their microphones turned off while pretending to sing. They were the fi...

Photo by Joon Ho If you've ever wanted to know the nitty gritty about preserving and/or buying one of those beautiful lane houses - or really, anything built before 1949 - still dotted along the city (especially before they get torn down and replaced by another skyscraper), Shanghai Scrap has an informative interview with Amy L. Sommers, who recently co-published "A Tragedy of the Common: Property Rights Issues in Shanghai Historic Residences" with Kara L. Phillips of the Seattle University Law Library. The interview gets into the details of the conflicts surrounding getting one of these older homes, which for the most part were seized from private owners during the Cultural Revolution. Namely, not only do you have to consider the original holders of the land, you also have to consider...

2nd Annual Cuisine Festival: September 17~19
SmartShanghai informs us that September not only brings to Shanghai its second Restaurant Week, but actually its second Cuisine Festival as well! And both are striving to be much better than last year. Thank goodness, because last year's Cuisine Festival was kind of a rip off. After paying 150RMB for the entry fee, I went in to find restaurants offering food for the same price they would have at their regular restaurants - sometimes even more. Free samples were almost impossible to come by and nothing there was a) haute, b) something you couldn't get anywhere else for cheaper. Honestly, who goes to a Cuisine Festival for barbeque chicken? In fact, if they hadn't lowered the admission this year to FREE, I would have called a giant pox on them. Now that you can just stroll on in, why not...

Liu Wei lost his arms after being electrocuted by a high-voltage wire when he was ten. On the most recent episode of the show, filmed at Shanghai Grand Theater, he played Richard Clayderman's "Mariage D'amour" with only his toes! Later, he gave an incredibly optimistic interview to Shanghai Daily: He said he feels no anger because of what happened all those years ago, as it was just "destiny" that arranged and decided his life. China's rich have $1.3 trillion in hidden income: 30% of China's GDP
Holy cow, no wonder China is now cracking down on naked officials! A study conducted for Credit Suisse AG found that as much as $1.5 trillion in income made here in China is strictly "off the books." That represents nearly 30% of China's gross domestic product, and would make the average urban disposable household income 32,154RMB (90% more than official figures). Well - it'd be one thing if it had been distributed evenly amongst the urban populace, apparently most of that extra cash is going to the top 10% of Chinese households.

Many of the students are looking to gain a better understanding of the Arab world, and they’re also finding their experiences and Arabic-language skills are making them hot prospects for jobs. More Thoughts About the Future of Guidebooks
The latest analysis comes from Financial Times travel editor Tom Robbins. A positive note: Sales figures may be dire, the challenges mounting, but this summer there’s a buzz in the world of travel publishing, a sense of being on the verge of a totally new era. The internet allowed people to research their trips themselves before setting out, but smartphone apps and iPads travel with them. Suddenly the guidebook publishers, who for years seemed to be looking on from the sidelines, unsure of how to make websites work for them, have found themselves with a medium that makes sense.

How to Eat Like a Local in Rome
Rome is known for its simple, time-tested cuisine, but choosing a restaurant can be tricky. Many places catering primarily to tourists cut corners and compromise on tradition—it's easy to wind up in a dining room where your fellow customers all speak English, your waiter is smuggly indifferent (or cartoonishly fawning), and, the one unforgivable shortcoming, your food is second-rate. For a more authentic experience, check out the local favorites of our Rome-based restaurant reviewer.

Chinese Developers to Recreate Salvador Dalí‘s Hometown
Xiamen Bay is the new Costa Brava! From the Guardian: Sources at the company said they had found a spot that was geographically similar to Cadaqués, with its gently sloping hills and protected bay. “Building work will start in September or October,” a spokesman said. More than 100 acres of land will be used to build a near replica with a capacity to house some 15,000 Chinese holidaymakers who want to enjoy the Costa Brava experience without having to travel 6,500 miles. The Chinese version will not have the sparkling Mediterranean, the madness-inducing Tramontana wind or as many jellyfish as Cadaqués, but the promoters say they will try to get as close to possible to the real thing. The developers are following in the footsteps of Lyon in the desert and Thames To...

Your Flight Attendant Jokes Do Not Amuse JetBlue
The airline’s been objecting to cracks about Steven Slater’s infamous emergency chute escapade via its official Twitter account. Of course, this only inspires the tweeting jokers to new heights; here’s comedian Andy Borowitz’s response: “At @JetBlue you have to pay $5 extra for a sense of humor. Exact change, please.” Meanwhile, the New York Times has unearthed the 1947 story of a Bronx bus driver who got fed up with his job—and took his rig on a 1,300-mile joy ride. That sounds even better than a trip down the inflatable slide, no?

Author Interview: Joelle Anthony discusses Restoring Harmony
Please welcome Debut Author Joelle Anthony to Dystopian August!  I reviewed her novel RESTORING HARMONY earlier today, and called it "cheerful dystopia".  Read on too see why Joelle intended it to be that way.In RESTORING HARMONY, Molly has several skills – playing the fiddle and knowing how to tend a garden are two - that help her survive, and yet she can’t count money. What are some of your own skills that might help you survive in Molly’s world and what are some gaps in your skill-set that might make it tougher?I’m quite good at cooking and making things out of ingredients as opposed to prepared foods. In Molly’s world, that’s all you’d have to cook with and I could definitely do it because I’m already doing it. I’m also pretty good at chopping wood and stack...

Waiting On Wednesday (44) Debut Dystopian Novels from The League of Extraordinary Writers
I've been a long time reader of Beth Revis' blog (author of the upcoming ACROSS THE UNIVERSE), so I was very excited when she banded together with a group of debut YA authors who write science fiction and dystopian works to form the The League of Extraordinary Writers. The five writers have works that run the gamut of near-future mind control to far-future space travel, but they do have one thing in common: a future where the Earth we know now is twisted, gone.In addition to Beth, the League is made up of  Elana Johnson (author of CONTROL ISSUES),  Julia Karr (author of XVI), Angie Smibert (author of MEMENTO NORA) and Jeff Hirsch (author of THE LONG WALK HOME). All of these books are coming out in Spring or Summer of 2011. [Find out more about the publication infor...

Book Review: This World We Live In by Susan Beth Pfeffer
THIS WORLD WE LIVE IN fails on pretty much every level, and also nearly manages to quash any goodwill I still have for book one of the series LIFE AS WE KNEW IT.I think the root of the problem is that the diary format just doesn’t work for this installment. In book one, it was interesting enough to follow Miranda’s personal journey via her written thoughts. She goes from a girl who has the whole world open to her to a girl trapped in a dark, cold room with only her starving family (and, yes, the family cat). However, this time around, Miranda’s character arc is so scant that it can’t sustain 256 pages of her whining. The diary format also makes the creation of three-dimensional supporting characters difficult. I do recall caring about the fate of Miranda’s family in the first boo...

Disney California Adventure to remove Maliboomer tower from skyline [Updated]
A towering symbol of the mammoth and myriad missteps made when Disney California Adventure opened nearly a decade ago will soon be erased forever from the skyline above the Anaheim theme park. The 180-foot-tall Maliboomer drop tower, an off-the-shelf thrill ride that embodied the on-the-cheap aesthetic and bad California puns that marked DCA’s debut, will mercifully [...]
