A big-screen incarnation of author Elizabeth Gilbert heads to
Italy, India and Indonesia. Eva Holland and Eli Ellison go along
for the ride.
Hooray! Vendela Vida kicks things off with a piece on two towns in
Turkey that inspired her latest book, “The Lovers.”
Still, I was slightly disappointed to find it not exactly as I
remembered. It seemed louder, and more popular, but its blemishes
less romantic and more ragged. I suppose this is what happens in
travel, and why we enjoy it. We know when we are traveling that
we’re experiencing a particular moment in time. We know that
every vacation is ephemeral and can’t be relived. I began to
think about what kind of character would return to a town and be
disappointed to find it was not as it once was. And that gave rise
to Yvonne, the protagonist in “The Lovers,” my most
recent novel. Yvonne is a 53-year-old widow who returns, 28 years
later, to th...

As with politics, it seems a week is a long time in Chinese
celebrity - you only have ask Guo Degang. It's unlikely he'll get
back to you though. He started off last week as a maverick
people’s hero, the highest-paid xiangsheng (cross-talk)
comedian in China and began this one as a virtual enemy of the
people. Things seemed to move so quickly against Guo, that by the
time the smoke began to clear on who did what to whom, it already
appeared to be too late for his career. The official version is
that a BTV investigation into whether Guo’s Beijing villa
encroached onto "public green space" turned nasty when a reporter
was allegedly beaten up by Li Hebiao, a
protégé of Guo’s. The comedian
himself then turned up the heat with an incendiary attack on the

To distinguish the real gold from the sparkling pyrite, look for a
qualified bar staff (a uniform of white shirt and black trouser is
often a good sign you won’t be waited on by a grubby

The most hygienic restrooms are in hotels and department stores and
are usually marked with international symbols. You may encounter
Japanese-style toilets, with bowls recessed into the floor, over
which you squat facing the top. If you can’t face a squat,
the last cubical in the row may be a Western-style toilet. In many
homes and Japanese-style public places, there will be a pair of
slippers at the entrance to the restroom. Change into these before
entering the room, and change back when you exit. Many public
toilets don’t have toilet paper, though there are dispensers
where packets can be purchased for Y50 (45 cents) or so.

“What validates fiction is plausibility, which
it creates for itself, most notably through accurate, honest
observation of the world it creates. This created world is of

That doesn't mean, of course, that everything has to work according

is set in our world, then I need the author to convince me
that the implausible things happening in the story are happening
for a reason.Dystopian works often take a modern issue and magnify
it through the lense of fiction, and this is always most ...

I suppose considering where we've seen kids pee in Shanghai, this
isn't quite so surprising - but still... GROSS! More than than 16%
of public swimming pools in the city have excess levels of urea,
according to officials from the Shanghai Health Supervision Agency.
The worst thing: excess levels of urea don't warrant anything -
fine, punishment or mandatory change of water. Instead, authorities
"usually give notice and suggest pool owners change the water more
frequently." Well gee, I'm not going into any public pools anytime
soon.

more waiting for those who want their Expo experience to last just
a little longer. And now, there's a website documenting all the
after-hours madness you can engage in: Exponights.com, whose
tagline is "Parties where Haibao doesn't go." That's not quite
true, as you can see from some of the photos, there are plenty of
Haibao's around. But we all get what they're trying to say. Thank
you Exponight people, all us visitors look forward to taking
advantage of your website and having a grand ol' time on Expo
grounds in a way that ...
Photo by Joon Ho If you've ever wanted to know the nitty gritty
about preserving and/or buying one of those beautiful lane houses -
or really, anything built before 1949 - still dotted along the city
(especially before they get torn down and replaced by another
skyscraper), Shanghai Scrap has an informative interview with Amy
L. Sommers, who recently co-published "A Tragedy of the Common:
Property Rights Issues in Shanghai Historic Residences" with Kara
L. Phillips of the Seattle University Law Library. The interview
gets into the details of the conflicts surrounding getting one of
these older homes, which for the most part were seized from private
owners during the Cultural Revolution. Namely, not only do you have
to consider the original holders of the land, you also have to
consider...
SmartShanghai informs us that September not only brings to Shanghai
its second Restaurant Week, but actually its second Cuisine
Festival as well! And both are striving to be much better than last
year. Thank goodness, because last year's Cuisine Festival was kind
of a rip off. After paying 150RMB for the entry fee, I went in to
find restaurants offering food for the same price they would have
at their regular restaurants - sometimes even more. Free samples
were almost impossible to come by and nothing there was a) haute,
b) something you couldn't get anywhere else for cheaper. Honestly,
who goes to a Cuisine Festival for barbeque chicken? In fact, if
they hadn't lowered the admission this year to FREE, I would have
called a giant pox on them. Now that you can just stroll on in, why
not...

We introduced you to some of the more amazing acts on China's Got
Talent
(ä¸å›½è¾¾äººç§€)
a few weeks ago, now another contender has appeared: 23-year-old
armless pianist Liu Wei, who plays with his feet. Liu Wei lost his
arms after being electrocuted by a high-voltage wire when he was
ten. On the most recent episode of the show, filmed at Shanghai
Grand Theater, he played Richard Clayderman's "Mariage D'amour"
with only his toes! Later, he gave an incredibly optimistic
interview to Shanghai Daily: He said he feels no anger because of
what happened all those years ago, as it was just "destiny" that
arranged and decided his life. "I don't know why people always
believe my life is so painful because I don't have arms," Liu said.
"I am a happy man living a colorful life, just like other y...
Remember how we went to Orange Alert a little while ago? The
insanely high temperatures of the last couple of days have shocked
Shanghai authorities into changing the color... to red! That's
hardly any comfort to anyone walking outside right now, and I'm not
really sure what the colors do besides tell us what we already
know... but anyway, look forward to rain (but just a teeny drop in
temperature tomorrow, and slightly more reasonable temperatures on
Monday in time for the Qixi Festival.
Holy cow, no wonder China is now cracking down on naked officials!
A study conducted for Credit Suisse AG found that as much as $1.5
trillion in income made here in China is strictly "off the books."
That represents nearly 30% of China's gross domestic product, and
would make the average urban disposable household income 32,154RMB
(90% more than official figures). Well - it'd be one thing if it
had been distributed evenly amongst the urban populace, apparently
most of that extra cash is going to the top 10% of Chinese
households.
Last
month, we noticed that, quite bizarrely, there was a Transformers
fan conference happening right here in Shanghai. We were deathly
curious about what was going on in there, but never found the time
to go. Luckily for us, Shanghaiist Flickr pool contributor Frank Yu
did manage to make it and snap some pics too! So if you've ever
wondered what the inside of a Chinese Transformer Con looks like,
now you know! More pictures of the event here.
The last we'd heard of Ordos in Inner Mongolia, it was a completely
modern, thoroughly upgraded ghost town, who knew it'd soon become
the setting of a Guinness World Record breaking human domino set?
From Straits Times: MORE than 10,000 people have set a new Guinness
World record for 'human dominoes' in China's Inner Mongolia,
toppling a record set a decade earlier in Singapore by more than
several hundred. The 10,276, mostly students seated cross-legged
and falling backwards in a line that snaked across an enormous
square, took 1 hour and 20 minutes to set the new record on
Thursday. 'The human dominoes were a success. The new record is
10,267 people. This is a new Guinness World record,' Guinness'
official Wu Shaohong said, in images broadcast on state television.

Last night I watched the Real Housewives of D.C. and one of the
characters had a vineyard in Virginia. Living in California, I
honestly had no idea other states produced wine, except for maybe
Oregon. When I was reading comments about the show, many...
They said it couldn't be done. Others, sensibly enough, asked why
we would want to do it in the first place. We were assured that
ratings inevitably will plummet, and that much of our core audience
will be outraged by this abominable, doomed exercise...
The country’s tourism agency has issued some, er, helpful
guidelines for locals in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games,
which will be held in London. Among the tips? Don’t serve
prepackaged jam to Germans, don’t mention the Falkland
Islands to Argentinians and don’t bring up the
Mexican-American War with Mexicans. In the accompanying video, a
Guardian reporter takes the tips for a test drive.
In the wake of the plane crash that killed former U.S. Senator Ted

“the unique world of Alaskan aviation,” noting that
it’s “more dangerous than elsewhere in the country, but
also more necessary.”
The numbers are still small-ish, but they’re growing fast.
From the New York Times: Between 2006 and 2007 the number of
American students studying in Arab countries rose nearly 60 percent
while China had only a 19 percent increase and England, 1.9
percent. Many of the students are looking to gain a better
understanding of the Arab world, and they’re also finding
their experiences and Arabic-language skills are making them hot
prospects for jobs. Students in these programs are also writing
some great travel stories.
The latest analysis comes from Financial Times travel editor Tom
Robbins. A positive note: Sales figures may be dire, the challenges
mounting, but this summer there’s a buzz in the world of
travel publishing, a sense of being on the verge of a totally new
era. The internet allowed people to research their trips themselves
before setting out, but smartphone apps and iPads travel with them.
Suddenly the guidebook publishers, who for years seemed to be
looking on from the sidelines, unsure of how to make websites work
for them, have found themselves with a medium that makes sense.
Eva Holland I’m in the Bay Area for a few days, visiting with
friends and colleagues at the Book Passage Travel, Food and

I’ve missed since moving to the Yukon nine months ago, and it
feels good to reconnect.

Rome is known for its simple, time-tested cuisine, but choosing a
restaurant can be tricky. Many places catering primarily to
tourists cut corners and compromise on tradition—it's easy to
wind up in a dining room where your fellow customers all speak
English, your waiter is smuggly indifferent (or cartoonishly
fawning), and, the one unforgivable shortcoming, your food is
second-rate. For a more authentic experience, check out the local
favorites of our Rome-based restaurant reviewer.
The rainy season starts in mid-September and lasts until
mid-November—which means you can expect afternoon downpours
that can last anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. Hurricane
season occurs during these months (and even from June to November);
past storms include Hurricane Wilma and Hurricane Dean.
This is your best, cheapest, and least complicated way of making
and receiving phone calls here. In Botswana and Swaziland, there
are no access agreements to allow you to use U.S. long-distance
services. Thus, you will not be able to make calls using your U.S.
calling card from Botswana or Swaziland.
Gourmet food trucks have elevated the dining scene in Los Angeles,
