Prague to Vienna
The second day in Prague went as planned a walk around the Communist Museum which was actually quite scary then a 4 hour walk up to and around the castle. It was 30 degrees with a cloudless sky and I got burned shoulders but it was an enjoyable day. Then it was time for the 'Jazz Boat'. One of our party was very keen for this excursion so we were one of the first in the queue at the marina to bo

Still having fun
Hi everyoneWe just spent the last two nights in ngorongoro. We visited the bushman. It was similar to the movie the gods must be crazy. It was so interesting. After that we went to another local village 'TOGA' tribe where they made copper and brass items such as jewellery and arrow heads. We finally seen the rhino which completes the Big 5. Went shopping today Jenny helped us haggle them do

Bus to Khao San
The bus pulls slowly into traffic and I sink slowly into the worn leather seats of the bus and slip my hand into Jen's hand...for the first time in Thailand I feel relaxed and so does she. We know at least for the next half hour where we're heading. We have no idea what's gonna happen when we get there aside from the fact that we're gonna have to put those backpacks back on and step off the

Bolvia La Paz region
We depart the ascendancy of Uyuni to the relative shallows of La Paz at only 3660m The arrival into La Paz is quite astonishing as you arrive from the flat sparse plains and descend like a corkscrew into the canyon of La Paz overlooked by huge snow capped mountains. There is also a hubub to the city not found elsewhere in Bolivia and its a little overbearing at times particularly with the cha

New York Times Debuts ‘Imprint’: Writers on Places that Inspired a Book
Hooray! Vendela Vida kicks things off with a piece on two towns in Turkey that inspired her latest book, “The Lovers.” Still, I was slightly disappointed to find it not exactly as I remembered. It seemed louder, and more popular, but its blemishes less romantic and more ragged. I suppose this is what happens in travel, and why we enjoy it. We know when we are traveling that we’re experiencing a particular moment in time. We know that every vacation is ephemeral and can’t be relived. I began to think about what kind of character would return to a town and be disappointed to find it was not as it once was. And that gave rise to Yvonne, the protagonist in “The Lovers,” my most recent novel. Yvonne is a 53-year-old widow who returns, 28 years later, to th...

‘Eat, Pray, Love’: Eight Great Links
The long-awaited adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat, Pray, Love” is in theaters at last, and it’s receiving no shortage of media attention. Here are a few worthy entry points. Start with Jezebel’s brilliant “Eat, Pray, Love” bingo scorecard. If you decide to go see the flick—despite the advice of the underwhelmed World Hum Travel Movie Club—then be sure to bring one along. And if you’re still on the fence about the movie, this helpful “Should You See Eat, Pray, Love?” graphic may help. The Daily Beast offers Eat, Pray, Love: A Man’s Guide—it’s a good read that focuses on the book rather than the movie—and the New York Post has a story on EPL-inspired guru devotees who’ve lost their s...

Book Review: The Blending Time by Michael Kinch
Jaym , Reya, and D’Shay are all about to turn 17 in the year 2054, and because none of them have any of the right connections, they are at the mercy of a government that can send them anywhere for dangerous work service. When they are sent to Africa to be blenders, at first they think they’ve lucked out – at least they aren’t getting sent to the canal zone and almost certain death. But they are about to find out that Africa doesn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for blenders…Right off the bat, I liked that I was introduced to three very diverse characters. Jaym is white, working class. Reya is a refugee from Mexico where sandstorms drove out the population. D’Shay is Af-Am (the book’s term, not mine) and has been in and out of foster homes his whole life. We see how their...

Red Car Trolley to ply Disney California Adventure streets in 2012

Ricky Gervais wrote in his blog on Thursday; “I have some amazing news ... We are about to start work on developing a Chinese 'The Office.' How cool is that?” The Office, a ‘mockumentary’, was originally broadcast in Britain back in 2001. It successfully secured an adoring fan base and was awarded numerous awards including awards at the British Comedy Awards and the Golden Globes. Since its broadcast it has been successfully remade for the US market and foreign language versions have been produced for France, Germany, French-speaking Canada and Chile. What's going on with Guo Degang, now China's most reviled comedian?
As with politics, it seems a week is a long time in Chinese celebrity - you only have ask Guo Degang. It's unlikely he'll get back to you though. He started off last week as a maverick people’s hero, the highest-paid xiangsheng (cross-talk) comedian in China and began this one as a virtual enemy of the people. Things seemed to move so quickly against Guo, that by the time the smoke began to clear on who did what to whom, it already appeared to be too late for his career. The official version is that a BTV investigation into whether Guo’s Beijing villa encroached onto "public green space" turned nasty when a reporter was allegedly beaten up by Li Hebiao, a protégé of Guo’s. The comedian himself then turned up the heat with an incendiary attack on the media during...

Ireland: Know that not all pubs are created equal
To distinguish the real gold from the sparkling pyrite, look for a qualified bar staff (a uniform of white shirt and black trouser is often a good sign you won’t be waited on by a grubby student), at least one man over 60 drinking at the bar (he should know the good bars by now, right?), no TV, and no recorded music (a pub is a place to talk).

Japan: Get a handle on what to expect in the bathroom
The most hygienic restrooms are in hotels and department stores and are usually marked with international symbols. You may encounter Japanese-style toilets, with bowls recessed into the floor, over which you squat facing the top. If you can’t face a squat, the last cubical in the row may be a Western-style toilet. In many homes and Japanese-style public places, there will be a pair of slippers at the entrance to the restroom. Change into these before entering the room, and change back when you exit. Many public toilets don’t have toilet paper, though there are dispensers where packets can be purchased for Y50 (45 cents) or so.

{fashion inspiration: antonio berardi, london}
. . . after the beautiful nostalgia of revisiting the photographs of our countryside picnic once again, was happily reminded that there are still many perfect summer days left and still time to wear sexy summer whites, and what could be better than the elegantly cuffed trousers and tailored jackets, little white dresses with flouncy skirts and delicately sheer and lacy blouses paired with city shorts and strappy sandals of antonio berardi's resort collection?{images: style.com}{this is glamorous} on facebook & follow on twitter copyright © 2007-2010 {this is glamorous} all rights reserved

Book Review: Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness
Full scale war is on the horizon for the citizens of New Prentisstown. Will Todd and Viola be able to barter a lasting peace for those already on the planet and those on the way? This last book in a fantastic series exceeded even my highest expectations. I was completely enthralled, and highly emotionally invested in the outcome – not just for the fates of Todd and Viola, but also, yes, for Todd’s horse (#teamboycolt). For those of you who read the first book (and I certainly hope you have if you are reading this review), you know that Ness has no qualms about killing off our favorite animals. And that’s why one of the thoughts that was foremost on my mind while I was reading this was “He better not kill Todd’s horse!†Anyway, back to Todd and Viola. They’ve both been through ...

Dystopian Reader Views - A Look at Plausibility
“What validates fiction is plausibility, which it creates for itself, most notably through accurate, honest observation of the world it creates. This created world is of course more or less directly related to and dependent on the actual, factual world outside the book.†Ursula K. LeGuinFor me to really get lost in a story, I have to believe in the plausibility of the world the author presents.  That doesn't mean, of course, that everything has to work according to the rules of our actual, non-fictional world. But if the story is set in our world, then I need the author to convince me that the implausible things happening in the story are happening for a reason.Dystopian works often take a modern issue and magnify it through the lense of fiction, and this is always most ...

Book Review: Green Angel by Alice Hoffman
15 year old Green didn’t go into the city that day with her family, but instead saw from the ridge how the city was destroyed. As conditions worsen around her, Green covers herself in black ink and thorns to protect herself from a desperate populace, and as a way to mourn all that she has lost.In a starred review back when this was released in 2003, Publisher’s Weekly described this as a “post-apocalyptic fairy tale leavened with hope.†I mention this because this does read far more like a fairy tale than a typical dystopian, and that has a lot to do with Hoffman’s use of language. Here’s how it starts:"I once believed that life was a gift. I thought whatever I wanted I would someday possess. Is this greed, or only youth? Is it hope or stupidity? As far as I was concerned the f...

16% of Shanghai public pools contain "excess levels" of pee
I suppose considering where we've seen kids pee in Shanghai, this isn't quite so surprising - but still... GROSS! More than than 16% of public swimming pools in the city have excess levels of urea, according to officials from the Shanghai Health Supervision Agency. The worst thing: excess levels of urea don't warrant anything - fine, punishment or mandatory change of water. Instead, authorities "usually give notice and suggest pool owners change the water more frequently." Well gee, I'm not going into any public pools anytime soon.

China's first pop singer fined for lip-synching tries to commit suicide
Photo from this Fang Ziyuan blog One of China's first pop singers to be fined for lip-synching, Fang Ziyuan, has allegedly tried to commit suicide, according to a Chengdu newspaper. Fang and her co-worker Ying Youcan, were accused of lip-synching their guest appearance at a Chinese pop diva's concert last year. Fang had grown up in Chengdu, learning to dance there. She had later moved on to Shanghai Film Academy, graduating as a performing professional. In September last year, she became the backup singer for superstar Huang Shenyi (黄圣ä¾) - better known as the girl with the lollipop in Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle - at a concert in Chengdu. In November, she and Ying Youcan were tried and fined for having their microphones turned off while pretending to sing. They were the fi...

2nd Annual Cuisine Festival: September 17~19
SmartShanghai informs us that September not only brings to Shanghai its second Restaurant Week, but actually its second Cuisine Festival as well! And both are striving to be much better than last year. Thank goodness, because last year's Cuisine Festival was kind of a rip off. After paying 150RMB for the entry fee, I went in to find restaurants offering food for the same price they would have at their regular restaurants - sometimes even more. Free samples were almost impossible to come by and nothing there was a) haute, b) something you couldn't get anywhere else for cheaper. Honestly, who goes to a Cuisine Festival for barbeque chicken? In fact, if they hadn't lowered the admission this year to FREE, I would have called a giant pox on them. Now that you can just stroll on in, why not...

China's Got Talent: Armless pianist plays Mariage D'amour

China's rich have $1.3 trillion in hidden income: 30% of China's GDP
Holy cow, no wonder China is now cracking down on naked officials! A study conducted for Credit Suisse AG found that as much as $1.5 trillion in income made here in China is strictly "off the books." That represents nearly 30% of China's gross domestic product, and would make the average urban disposable household income 32,154RMB (90% more than official figures). Well - it'd be one thing if it had been distributed evenly amongst the urban populace, apparently most of that extra cash is going to the top 10% of Chinese households.

Looking at the Black and White World
They said it couldn't be done. Others, sensibly enough, asked why we would want to do it in the first place. We were assured that ratings inevitably will plummet, and that much of our core audience will be outraged by this abominable, doomed exercise...

Studying Abroad in the Arabic-Speaking World on the Rise
The numbers are still small-ish, but they’re growing fast. From the New York Times: Between 2006 and 2007 the number of American students studying in Arab countries rose nearly 60 percent while China had only a 19 percent increase and England, 1.9 percent. Many of the students are looking to gain a better understanding of the Arab world, and they’re also finding their experiences and Arabic-language skills are making them hot prospects for jobs. Students in these programs are also writing some great travel stories.

More Thoughts About the Future of Guidebooks
The latest analysis comes from Financial Times travel editor Tom Robbins. A positive note: Sales figures may be dire, the challenges mounting, but this summer there’s a buzz in the world of travel publishing, a sense of being on the verge of a totally new era. The internet allowed people to research their trips themselves before setting out, but smartphone apps and iPads travel with them. Suddenly the guidebook publishers, who for years seemed to be looking on from the sidelines, unsure of how to make websites work for them, have found themselves with a medium that makes sense.

Eva Holland I’m in the Bay Area for a few days, visiting with friends and colleagues at the Book Passage Travel, Food and Photography Conference, and it’s been a treat so far—the in-person writing community is one of the few things I’ve missed since moving to the Yukon nine months ago, and it feels good to reconnect.

How to Eat Like a Local in Rome
Rome is known for its simple, time-tested cuisine, but choosing a restaurant can be tricky. Many places catering primarily to tourists cut corners and compromise on tradition—it's easy to wind up in a dining room where your fellow customers all speak English, your waiter is smuggly indifferent (or cartoonishly fawning), and, the one unforgivable shortcoming, your food is second-rate. For a more authentic experience, check out the local favorites of our Rome-based restaurant reviewer.
