Video: Is this the new Shanghai Natural History Museum?
If it is what we can look forward to in 2012, then holy cow! I think Shanghai might have finally gotten its first absolutely must-see museum attraction. Designed by Perkins + Will, the "Shanghai Nature Museum" features a nautilus shell-like design shape and will contain 35,000 square meters of display space, as well as research space underground (which members apparently have access to). According to Shanghai Daily, members of the museum will actually be able to take part in research activities in their underground lab. How cool is that? The Shanghai Natural History Museum 2.0 will open in Jing'an Sculpture Space in 2012... and it may be free. I have to admit, when I first found out the place we dubbed as the most "podunk museum" in Shanghai was closing down, I was a little disappointed....

Is China's lack of women making its men die out faster?
Need a health boost? As if unsafe food, natural disasters and the possibility of needing to clean up crude oil in nothing but your skivvies wasn't bad enough, men in China may be facing a more dire threat to their health - the one child policy and its resulting lack of women. It's now well known that China's one child policy, combined with "Confucian values," has resulted in millions more men than women (though some say the gap isn't as pronounced as official figures would have you believe). But while the situation has always been unfortunate for the 20-some million single guys here, recent studies contend that all men are being affected by the dearth of girls. The Economist highlights two studies - one comparing life spans of people born in the U.S. state of Wisconsin in 1957 to th...

Flights from Shanghai to Hong Kong now leaving from Hongqiao airport
Good news for anyone who lives in Puxi and wants to visit our economic rival/friendly sister city to the South: China Eastern Airlines and its newish subsidiary, Shanghai Airlines, will now be launching direct flights to Hong Kong from Hongqiao International Airport. They'll start up on Sept. 10 and increase the weekly flights between the two destinations to over 200. Yay for at least a 50% reduction in last minute taxi fares to the airport!

Chinese netizens report: 51.23% of sold housing in Shanghai is vacant
One of the most frustrating parts of living in Shanghai as a middle class income holder is knowing that, while you can't afford an apartment, half the stock in the city is sitting empty thanks to zealous richer-than-you investors. That probably explains the grassroots turnout for helping Sina.com's investigation into empty houses in cities. The investigation came about after a report from the National Bureau of Statistics found that unsold homes rose 0.2% in terms of floor space at the end of June. But the report didn't provide much specifics and refused to talk about the "housing vacancy rate" - a widely debated issue that many feel goes straight to the heart of accusations of real estate speculation. "There are no official and reliable figures to reflect the vacancy rate in the cur...

Mile High Club: China's first private jet expo held in Shanghai
Alas, we apparently weren't rich enough to get on the guest list for China's first "Private and Business Jet Expo" ever, held over the weekend in Hongqiao airport, since we just found out about it now. People who could schmooze their ways in were treated to private jet aircrafts displays, demonstration flights and exhibition pavilions, as well as some measure of controversy. It seems that private jets have yet to be added to the list of Chinese goods under the "luxury tax," turning private aviation pollution "into a legal vacuum where no related department is involved in" - an especially sensitive issue considering both the rising wealth gap and China's growing environmental concerns.

Watch: 148 make out sessions for each and every World Expo pavilion
In remembrance of the now past Qixi Festival (China's Valentine's Day, kinda) here's a very cute video by some young couple who managed to film themselves kissing at each and every Expo Pavilion. The concept sounds gross and PDA-y, but the way they decided to go about it was actually pretty adorable and sweet (and, I guess, the Taylor Swift soundtrack helps). I especially love the handshake for the DPRK Pavilion. According to Shanghai Expo Insights, the video has spread like wildfire through BBSes and websites.

Disturbing statistics about disposable chopsticks
Photo from Shanghaiist Flickr Pool by Je.T. The recent landslides in Gansu, which have racked up a death toll of killed 1117 people so far, has gotten the LA Times to ponder the issue of disposable chopsticks. Why? Because apparently, they contribute greatly to the ongoing deforestation and desertification of China, which has been blamed for causing worse floods every year. Some crazy stats about China's disposable chopsticks usage, from the article and some extra research, below: China's population goes through roughly 45 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks a year - that's 130 million pairs a day. To keep up with this demand, 100 acres of trees - 100 American football fields worth - are felled every day. That means that one acre of trees gets cut down to make chopsticks every 1...

Reservations for Restaurant Week start today
One of the biggest culinary events around the world, Restaurant Week is here for a second run in Shanghai. This edition will include even more restaurants at cheaper prices. Who can resist? Restaurant Week 2 starts September 6th but venues take reservations starting today. The purpose of Restaurant Week, according to co-founder Bierman, is to introduce local gourmands onto the Western dining scene. Although a few major Chinese venues have found their way onto the list, the restaurants are still mostly Western. Participating restaurants will serve three-course set dinners for RMB 238, and three-course set lunches for RMB 118. Notables on the list this year include Hamilton House, T8 (which was wildly popular last year), Kathleen's 5, and the entire Laris empire (Laris, Downstairs, and ...

Born again virgins: The newest plastic surgery craze in China
Photo from Flickr Commons by Pete Kraynak By Daniel Mark Carr We all know that many things are on the rise in China; the economy, the middle class population, the number of foreign TV series, and if the last few days are anything to go by, the temperature! Now add to the list... wait for it, ‘Hymenorrhaphy’. The surgical reconstruction of the hymen. Earlier this month we reported that China ranked second in countries with most plastic surgery procedures, but it seems youthful looks aren’t all that women are searching for. More and more women are requesting to become ‘born again virgins’ via this procedure to reconstruct the hymen; aptly nicknamed ‘revirginity’. The aim of the procedure is to cause bleeding during post-nuptial intercourse. T...

Zimbabwe to use Chinese RMB as legal tender?
Is this what Mugabe came over to Shanghai for? Rumors are rising that Zimbabwe may be considering using the Chinese yuan as legal tender, rather than their now completely useless Zimbabwe dollar (officially stopped in 2009). Allegedly, tourist department head Hon. Walter Mzembi told First Finance Daily, "I hope that in the future, people in Zimbabwe will be able to use Chinese bank cards and the yuan to make purchases, even take out RMB loans."

Ask Shanghaiist: What should you do when you find a stray animal?
Because of the Spring/Summer animal love fest season, you've probably noticed a lot of sad, mewling, motherless kittens desperately screaming out for help in your compound. I've personally had quite a few friends come up to me asking me what to do when, hearts softened by these pitiful creatures, they've picked them up and taken them home. So, in order to give my friends - and all you potential foster parents - the most accurate info possible, we asked volunteers at Jaiya's Animal Rescue for a step-by-step process for helping strays. Here it is below: On the internet you can find several rescue guidelines from different animal rescue volunteers around the world but, unfortunately, there is no single standard for these kind of guidelines. Hereafter, this article explores the issue based...

China Beat: China's just realized the Expo is not as eye-catching as the Olympics
As Maura Elizabeth Cunningham and Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom mention in Yale Global, Chinese officials have been disappointed by the lack of foreigner interest in the World Expo. While foreign media outlets have done their part to talk about and promote the event, very few foreigners are actually coming. Then again, this may just be because, "more than any city in the world, Shanghai already resembles a futuristic fairground even when no circus is in town," making this age's World's Fair redundant.

Bizzare places to see Haibao: On pregnant women bellies
Why did a bunch of pregnant ladies get together to paint Haibao on their bellies? To win a Pregnant Woman Fashion show at the 5th Body Painting Exhibition on Hainan Island. This year's theme was "Lucky 'Pregnant' International Tourist Island respondes to the Shanghai World Expo," which is why each and everyone of these pre-borns got the Haibao treatment. Contestants came from all over China, including Inner Mongolia and - of course - Shanghai. Apparently, the contest is still accepting applicants, so if you're in your third trimester and would love to get Haibao painted on your belly, head down to Haikou right now!

Shanghai has the highest minimum monthly wage in China
According to People's Daily, Shanghai's minimum monthly salary standard is set at 1,120RMB, currently the highest in China. Under national law, provincial governments must adjust local minimum wage standards every two years - and Shanghai, part of the coastal economic powerhouses along with JIangsu and Zhejiang, were the first to raise the standard in February. Now they're joined by 27 other provinces, including, most recently, Qinghai.

Official's career goes down the toilet; China makes him a martyr
It's quite amazing the lengths that some selfless cadres will go to in their official duties - even if it comes at the cost of their own life. One sad example is 29-year-old Zhu Jihong, whose promising career was cut short on July 24 after a well-deserved toilet break suddenly turned fatal. According to an online forum post by a work colleague named “Wanggouyou”, Zhu was enjoying a typical routine of toil that began with an early lunch. Afterwards, Zhu “surfed the internet as usual and chatted with his girlfriend online. He promised to meet her later and logged off… later he went to the bathroom and fell.” In recognition of Zhu’s tireless devotion to the grind, Sichuan officials immediately recognized his status as an “Outstanding Party Member&...

$200,000: How much it takes a Shanghainese to get their kid into Harvard
What that buys, according to Gady Epstein at Forbes: "Weekend classes, summer schools and small group trips over three to four years before they start school at American colleges. Their teachers at the program, the two-year-old Leadership Academy Shanghai, are mostly recent graduates from the best universities in China. The instruction style is bespoke and not very Confucian: very small classes, with students challenging their teachers." Oh yes, and not only bragging rights when your kid actually gets in, but the security of presuming he might actually be qualified to take over your family business when you retire - something the older generation apparently regards as priceless.

The ‘On the Road’ Movie: It’s Really Happening, and Soon
When a couple of major casting decisions for the long-awaited flick were announced this spring, I remained skeptical about the project hitting theaters anytime soon. Turns out I should have been more optimistic: “On the Road” is filming now, in locations as far-flung as Montreal, New Orleans, San Francisco and New Mexico. Get the Big Picture’s Colin Boyd thinks it could be ready for Sundance 2011. A number of heavyweights have joined the cast in supporting roles: Amy Adams, Viggo Mortenson, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Steve Buscemi and Terrence Howard will all make appearances. I’ll admit, I’m getting excited for this one.

Venezuelans Show Some Love For Love Hotels
Japan’s love hotels get a lot of media love. Now it’s Venezuela’s turn in the spotlight. Rachel Jones writes: University students such as Daniel Ramirez, 24, often turn to mid-range hotels in central Caracas to be with their significant others. On his first visit to Hotel Roda, Ramirez had the opportunity to be intimate with a month-long girlfriend for the first time. “There was no place I could go to see her,” said Ramirez, who lives with his family because he can’t afford an apartment. He was reasonably satisfied with his experience—including clean rooms, wall and ceiling mirrors, and a television with pornography—and later returned with another girlfriend. The awkward part, he said, was a lack of privacy in the hallways. “Couples...

U.S. Virgin Islands: Pick your island carefully
St. Thomas is the most developed of the Virgin Islands. Stay here if you want to shop, see historic sights, play golf, or dine out a lot. The more luxurious resorts are on the island’s eastern end. St. John is mostly national park, and as the least developed of the three islands is good if you want a small-island feel and easy access to great hiking. That said, most of the villas aren’t right on the beach. St. Croix has everything from simple inns to luxury resorts, including some places that specialize in diving on the north coast. That said, none of its beaches rivals those on St. Thomas or St. John.

Delta has launched the “Ticket Window,” an interface for selling airline tickets via Facebook. It’s an interesting but possibly controversial move. New York Times Debuts ‘Imprint’: Writers on Places that Inspired a Book
Hooray! Vendela Vida kicks things off with a piece on two towns in Turkey that inspired her latest book, “The Lovers.” Still, I was slightly disappointed to find it not exactly as I remembered. It seemed louder, and more popular, but its blemishes less romantic and more ragged. I suppose this is what happens in travel, and why we enjoy it. We know when we are traveling that we’re experiencing a particular moment in time. We know that every vacation is ephemeral and can’t be relived. I began to think about what kind of character would return to a town and be disappointed to find it was not as it once was. And that gave rise to Yvonne, the protagonist in “The Lovers,” my most recent novel. Yvonne is a 53-year-old widow who returns, 28 years later, to th...

The Daily Beast offers Eat, Pray, Love: A Man’s Guide—it’s a good read that focuses on the book rather than the movie—and the New York Post has a story on EPL-inspired guru devotees who’ve lost their s...

Book Review: The Blending Time by Michael Kinch
Jaym , Reya, and D’Shay are all about to turn 17 in the year 2054, and because none of them have any of the right connections, they are at the mercy of a government that can send them anywhere for dangerous work service. When they are sent to Africa to be blenders, at first they think they’ve lucked out – at least they aren’t getting sent to the canal zone and almost certain death. But they are about to find out that Africa doesn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for blenders…Right off the bat, I liked that I was introduced to three very diverse characters. Jaym is white, working class. Reya is a refugee from Mexico where sandstorms drove out the population. D’Shay is Af-Am (the book’s term, not mine) and has been in and out of foster homes his whole life. We see how their...

Red Car Trolley to ply Disney California Adventure streets in 2012
It’s a testament to Disney California Adventure’s disconnect from the vision of its famously transportation-obsessed namesake that the Anaheim theme park was built without a ride dedicated to a bus, streetcar or train. Across the way, Disneyland’s Main Street USA bristles with vehicular traffic: A horse-drawn streetcar, a fire engine, a “horseless carriage” and double-decker bus [...]

It successfully secured an adoring fan base and was awarded numerous awards including awards at the British Comedy Awards and the Golden Globes. MONDAY Tonight is the Qixi Festival (aka, rightfully or not, as Chinese Valentine's Day) and while it may be too late to get reservations at nice restaurants if you haven't already - there are still ways to celebrate it: by partying it up at several nightlife locations. Nothing says romance more than a thumping bass and sweaty limbs, right? The FC Club hosts a swinging singles party at ChinaTown Shanghai Club that promises to be "fun and romantic for singles and a night of networking, flirting and dancing." What's going on with Guo Degang, now China's most reviled comedian?
As with politics, it seems a week is a long time in Chinese celebrity - you only have ask Guo Degang. It's unlikely he'll get back to you though. He started off last week as a maverick people’s hero, the highest-paid xiangsheng (cross-talk) comedian in China and began this one as a virtual enemy of the people. Things seemed to move so quickly against Guo, that by the time the smoke began to clear on who did what to whom, it already appeared to be too late for his career. The official version is that a BTV investigation into whether Guo’s Beijing villa encroached onto "public green space" turned nasty when a reporter was allegedly beaten up by Li Hebiao, a protégé of Guo’s. The comedian himself then turned up the heat with an incendiary attack on the media during...

Ireland: Know that not all pubs are created equal
To distinguish the real gold from the sparkling pyrite, look for a qualified bar staff (a uniform of white shirt and black trouser is often a good sign you won’t be waited on by a grubby student), at least one man over 60 drinking at the bar (he should know the good bars by now, right?), no TV, and no recorded music (a pub is a place to talk).

Japan: Get a handle on what to expect in the bathroom
The most hygienic restrooms are in hotels and department stores and are usually marked with international symbols. You may encounter Japanese-style toilets, with bowls recessed into the floor, over which you squat facing the top. If you can’t face a squat, the last cubical in the row may be a Western-style toilet. In many homes and Japanese-style public places, there will be a pair of slippers at the entrance to the restroom. Change into these before entering the room, and change back when you exit. Many public toilets don’t have toilet paper, though there are dispensers where packets can be purchased for Y50 (45 cents) or so.

I had already seen many of the lsquomust seesrsquo in Florence on my previous trip so chose to spend my time people watching and absorbing the Italian atmosphere. Food seems to becoming qui

Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre was somewhere I had longed to go to after my last European holiday and it certainly didnrsquot disappoint. How I love to spend my time beside the seaside. My first port of call was Porto Venere a short 40 minute ferry ride from La Spezia where I was staying. Another beautiful hot summers day provided the perfect backdrop for the picture perfect village with its tall narrow rusti

Ahlan So this is a continuation of my last blog and the second leg of my trip in my last weekend of Jordan. After we found a really nice driver to take the four of us to Wadi Rum we were off. The ride was pleasant and before we knew it we saw our other friends and the driver waiting to take us into Wadi Rum. In total there were 7 of us in the jeep plus all are luggage but we managed. The scene

Coober Pedy Day10
We had a good nightrsquos sleep in our Underground Motel room and endured a cold shower and then started to explore the town in more detail. After doing some shopping at the Supermarket we went down to an Underground Shop and Museum where Sandy purchased a watch. After lunch we went to the Old Timers Mine and it was here we appreciated the hardship the miners went through to make a living ch

Stockholm Sailor Jerry soda bread ukulele cabaret and giant papier mache mushrooms
I've arrived in Oslo after a prolonged journey where we had to change onto a bus midway through the journey and then get onto another train. I think ferries are the way forward. You don't get any of that larking about with transferring to other forms of transport midcruise Ladies and gentlemen I'm afraid there's been a prang with a jellyfish and this ship isn't going any further. Long Day to Kings Canyon Day 11
We got up very early and were on the road by 7am leaving Coober Pedy. We stopped to take pictures of the sunrise and had battery problems with the camera. We had the heater going full blast at this stage as it was cold outside. We saw dead Kangaroos burnt out cars Camels Cattle Beasts and Wedge Tail Eagles and there were puddles from the recent rains. We stopped at roadhouses to buy fuel an

Rock n Roll Hall of Fame
After taking a day off from travel and sightseeing we got up early today and took Karlie to doggy day camp so that we could spend a leisurely day in Cleveland seeing the sights and not having to worry about her in the heat. The drive to Cleveland from our campground was very easy and we found the city to be very easy to manuever around in as well. The RocknRoll Hall of Fame was our main destin

Not A Joke For Ladies
I was taking a nice long walk on the beach with Kumar. There was a rare moment of silence between us so I piped up Kumar tell me something funny. With my direct command he switched gears between friend and driver immediately. Oh...funny...madam I don't know. I need to think he says. He gets quiet and pensive and I can see he's straining to think of something funny to tell me. H
